Research on Optoelectronic IoT Multimodal Fusion for Natural Disaster Alerts and Engineering Safety

The objective of the SAFE-IoT project is to develop a technological solution for the real-time structural monitoring of critical infrastructure. This system will enable the early detection of risk situations and facilitate rapid responses to disasters or structural degradation caused by aging or other phenomena.

To achieve this goal, the project involves the creation of a comprehensive system based on distributed fiber optic sensors with demodulation via multichannel photonic chips using Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology, industrial IoT nodes featuring low power consumption and long-range capabilities based on the LoRaWAN protocol, and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, hosted on a cloud-based SaaS platform.

This solution will allow for the precise, continuous, and efficient capture of structural data, thereby strengthening the safety, resilience, and sustainability of the monitored infrastructures.

SAFE-IoT will enhance international collaboration between Spain and China’s Tiangong University, renowned for its leadership in photonic chips and flexible optoelectronic sensors, thereby fostering technology transfer and the exchange of knowledge.
