More sustainable mining through digital innovation in the illuMINEation project

Overview

After three and a half years of pioneering research and development, the illuMINEation project has reached a successful conclusion. As a pivotal technology partner in this European Union-funded initiative, Worldsensing is proud to have significantly contributed to the development of cutting-edge digital solutions designed to make underground mining not only safer but also more efficient and sustainable.

Digital transformation for safer and more sustainable mining practices

The illuMINEation project aimed to modernize underground mining by leveraging advanced digital technologies to enhance health, safety, and environmental performance (HS&E). Worldsensing’s involvement in the project centered on advancing the use of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to facilitate real-time monitoring of mine environments, equipment, and personnel. This digital transformation is essential for creating a mining industry that can achieve future sustainability targets while maintaining economic viability.

One of Worldsensing’s key contributions to the project was the integration of low-cost, wireless sensors into mining operations. These sensors enable continuous monitoring of critical parameters such as atmospheric conditions related to safety (like dust monitoring inside a mine gallery) and geotechnical stability. When combined with advanced data analytics, the system can provide real-time risk assessments, allowing mine operators to respond swiftly to changing conditions and prevent accidents before they occur.

Worldsensing also supported the digitization of a processing plant, monitoring water parameters (pH and suspended solids).

Technological innovation endorsed by the European Commission

Notably, Worldsensing developed a groundbreaking new product as part of illuMINEation to address key mining industry challenges: the K20 Edge Repeater. This repeater can extend the communication range of deployments to gain significant network range, especially underground. Data can travel along multiple repeaters in hops before arriving at the main gateway, thus gaining significant longer range.

“This monitoring solution can achieve up to 10 km of communication range. We wanted to tackle coverage challenges in complex geographical topologies, such as mining underground environments, tunnels or inside dam galleries.” Ignasi Garcia-Milà, Innovation Project Manager.

The European Commission has recognized Worldsensing as a “key innovator” for its development of the “Long-range, low-power multi-hop radio transmission for improved underground gallery coverage” This innovation was evaluated by the European Commission’s science and knowledge service (Joint Research Centre) using the Market Creation Potential indicator framework, which determined it effectively addresses the needs of existing markets and clients.Further recognition was conferred upon Worldsensing for its development of “Low-power, battery-operated IoT nodes to integrate mining sensors” within the illuMINEation project.

Intelligent rock bolts: a breakthrough in safety monitoring

Among the innovations introduced during the project was the deployment of ‘intelligent rock bolts.’ These sensor-equipped bolts monitor rock mass stability in real-time, providing crucial information on underground safety conditions. The intelligent rock bolt heads developed during illuMINEation featured sensors, microprocessors, and data transmission devices capable of near-real-time data recording. This enables mine operators to gain a deeper understanding of underground stability, thereby enhancing both safety and operational efficiency.

Data-driven decision making

In addition to enhancing safety, Worldsensing helped develop systems that support efficient and environmentally responsible mining practices. By combining sensor data with machine learning algorithms, mine operators can gain valuable insights into the status of equipment, material flows, and environmental conditions. This data-driven approach allows for predictive maintenance, reducing machine downtime and minimizing environmental impacts by avoiding equipment failures and optimizing resource use.

Towards a more sustainable mining future

The mining sector faces increasing pressure to operate more sustainably while meeting the growing global demand for raw materials. Digital mines, equipped with intelligent monitoring systems and data analytics, are key to achieving this balance. The illuMINEation project demonstrated how advanced technologies can be deployed to lower the environmental footprint of mining operations.

At the core of this shift toward digitalization is the ability to collect, process, and analyze vast amounts of data in real-time. Worldsensing’s IIoT solutions are designed to extract value from this data, enabling smarter, safer, and more sustainable mining practices. As the mining industry continues to evolve, the adoption of digital solutions will be crucial in helping operators meet increasingly stringent environmental and safety regulations.

Looking Ahead

With the conclusion of the illuMINEation project, Worldsensing reaffirms its commitment to driving innovation within the mining sector. The lessons learned and technologies developed throughout the project will continue to serve as a foundation for future advancements in mining safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

By empowering the industry with data-driven insights and real-time monitoring capabilities, digital mines have the potential to reshape the future of mining. At Worldsensing, we are excited to be at the forefront of this transformation, working towards a more sustainable and responsible mining industry. For further information about Worldsensing’s involvement in the illuMINEation project and our ongoing innovations in the mining sector, please visit our website or contact us at [email protected]
