Successful in-field trial of oneTRANSPORT smart city initiative at Silverstone Circuit

Worldsensing Bitcarrier technology part of traffic flow management ecosystem

Situated in Towcester, Northamptonshire, in the heart of England, Silverstone attracts over 1 million visitors every year. On an average event day over 300,000 fans head to the circuit to watch drivers and riders compete. With so many people coming through the gates at once, the venue management team and local authorities have a need for understanding how visitors drive to, access and park around the site in order to manage traffic for event attendees and locals more efficiently.

Silverstone Circuit attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who arrive at the venue utilising a number of transport modes, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our visitor experience, which includes the journey to and from the venue,” says Silverstone events head Alex Lacey.

At the beginning of September 2016, Silverstone Circuit gained insight into visitor behavior during the British Grand Prix MotoGP™ while the oneTRANSPORT system measured traffic flows before, during and after the events. The vision of oneTRANSPORT is to create an open marketplace for data and data services for the transport sector by using the IoT open international standard oneM2M™. Events at Silverstone are large-scale use cases in which the capabilities of oneTRANSPORT are tested and its impact in providing services in a real world context is evaluated. The recording of transport data during the MotoGP was preceded by initial data gathering during the F1™ British Grand Prix in July 2016.

WorldSensing Ltd. is participating in the oneTRANSPORT initiative as Bitcarrier technology provider and transport expert. The IoT data generated in known hot spots and strategic junctions has already been successfully integrated into the oneTRANSPORT platform.

The insights collected during both races in 2016 and during other use cases within the oneTRANSPORT trial phase will help to further develop functionalities for event management, that can be integrated in mobile apps. During major public events mobility apps can then provide visitors with live traffic updates and available parking spaces and can significantly improve the overall visitor experience.

In collaboration with 10 partners, WorldSensing does not only contribute its technology, but also its knowledge acquired during many years of engineering and consulting in the transportation industry with the aim to assist transport authorities in the future.
