Using Operational Intelligence expertise to achieve IoT efficiency
Barcelona, September 2018
As part of Worldensing’s focus to participate in cutting-edge research and development initiatives, the IoT pioneer and Operational Intelligence provider is part of the BIG IoT project. The Barcelona-based company was selected as one of the most innovative companies among 39 contestants during the Second Open Call in 2018 and will develop new applications and services based on existing BIG IoT offerings in the mobility and transportation vertical. With Worldsensing’s application ‘Mobility’ being deployed in various projects around the globe, Smart Cities improve urban operations such as traffic management and parking by connecting all their existing data sources and expert systems to one, overarching solution. These cities leverage Worldsensing’s IoT technology to make their operations more efficient and are enabled to make real-time decisions based on actionable data insights.
Working together for the European IoT platform market
The Big IoT initiative aims to foster the creation of a European Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem by building a Big IoT marketplace for IoT services and applications. The objective of the 12 main companies involved in this project, among them Seat, Bosch, and Siemens, is to provide a solution for the current interoperability gap for vertically integrated IoT platforms. What this means is that they are aiming to unify the technology European IoT platform providers use to connect their platforms to each other, because at this point, every company uses a different approach. Besides, no common, widely recognized professional IoT platform ecosystem exists in Europe despite various Internet of Things research and innovation projects. The reason for this seems to be that the entry barriers for developers and service providers are high due to the IoT platform market being extremely fragmented.
Big IoT intends to overcome these interoperability restrictions by introducing Big IoT API – a unified web API for the European community.  Both the API and Big IoT Marketplace are currently being rolled out and tested in three European pilots in Barcelona, Berlin/Wolfsburg and the region of Piedmont, Italy. In total, the Big IoT project is collaborating with eight IoT platform providers to start the Big IoT Ecosystem. Started in 2015, the initiative is scheduled to be completed later this year.

About the Big IoT project
Big IoT is a European project focused on enabling IoT ecosystems. The twelve companies involved will provide their technologies to create cross- standard, cross-platform, and cross-domain IoT services and applications. The initiative is embedded in the European IoT Platforms Initiative. The BIG IoT project joins large companies with experts from small enterprises and research and public bodies to implement the BIG IoT API and the BIG IoT Marketplace. By means of these two technologies, the project consortium is building an IoT ecosystem where European companies can exploit the business potential of the IoT sector.
