In time for IPI, the world’s largest parking conference by International Parking Institute in Orlando, Florida, Worldsensing is launching an updated version of its leading outdoor parking management system.
Fastprk, which is ranked among the top four parking offerings by leading market analyst IDC (International Data Corporation), now features a dual-detection sensor and is integrated in an advanced software solution which enables cities and private operators to connect to 3rd party APIs and subsystems to optimize existing services and set up novel approaches to improve their parking operations. This integration allows users to build and integrate customized end-to-end solutions on top of the new parking management system.
“We wanted to take the existing parking technology available today and make it even better.”, explains Victor Sanchez, Product Manager of Smart City Products at Worldsensing. “It’s a challenge for most cities and operators to collect reliable parking occupancy data due to high magnetic noise. Most systems struggle to reach 95% accuracy. We set out to make this an issue of the past.”, states the telecommunications engineer.
To validate the data accuracy and system reliability of the updated smart parking technology, Worldsensing conducted tests with partners across the world to test Fastprk in real-world conditions, among them Swarco (Austria), Engie (Belgium) and Parking Sense (USA). From having to work under extreme temperatures or harsh weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow and ice and in environments with high magnetic noise such as in the proximity of metro stations, Fastprk exceeded the partners’ expectations:
“Had I not seen it with my own eyes in LA, I would not have believed how good Fastprk works. 97-98% accuracy and hitting sensors from the gateway over 300 meters away: very impressive.”, points out Larry Eade, VP Operations for parking solution provider Parking Sense.
Once a parking management system has been installed, being able to easily replace parking sensors is an operational requirement by most cities and operators. While Fastprk allows for up to ten years of unattended runtime due to the long battery life integrated in the sensor, the new product features a double encapsulation design. Holes in the tarmac only have to be drilled once to accommodate the technology which is placed in the ground. The outside casing doesn’t need to be replaced. This doesn’t only make maintenance processes easier, but is also more sustainable for the environment.
While the Fastprk system is a preferred product for outdoor, on-street parking management, the new Fastprk software can be integrated with indoor, off-street products to complement the offering and enables end-to-end parking solutions. Cities, malls and hospitals, among others, can use the solution for slot utilization optimization, parking guidance, enforcement and payments. Together with its global partner network, Fastprk enables creating and implementing customized solutions tailored to specific pain points such as congestion or enforcement in cities.
“Fastprk was originally a stand-alone product. Our objective was to integrate it in the company’s software ecosystem. We can now track fleets of vehicles in a city, integrate smart lighting and pollution monitoring and bring it all together in one, intelligent, operational solution.”, underlines Michael Roher, Smart City Solutions expert at Worldsensing.
The new Fastprk technology is already part of a real-world project. Together with parking solution provider, Parking Sense, Worldsensing is deploying 20,000 outdoor parking sensors in the proximity of Los Angeles Metro stations. Parking Sense joined forces with Worldsensing to cover the outdoor parking requirements of the project. The combined solution enables drivers to see real-time availability of spots for car-sharing and electrical vehicles as well as those requiring special permits like spaces for disabled drivers.
By means of this smart parking solution, LA Metro will be able benefit from increased ridership and revenues, the city of Los Angeles can experience reduced traffic congestion and emissions, and most importantly the citizens can reap the benefits of their taxes and travel within the city with less hassles and headaches.
When asked about why he thinks Worldsensing as a medium sized Barcelona-based business has been able to work with over 60 cities worldwide and has installed over 5.000 parking sensors around the globe in 2016 and 2017 alone, Ignasi Vilajosana, Worldsensing CEO and co-founder sums up:
