Combating climate change remains amongst one of the biggest global challenges. For the sixth year in a row, the EU bank increased its finance for projects that contribute to climate action and environmental sustainability, including in Spain, where 43% (€3.897 billion) of all lending in the country in 2021 was allocated to green projects.
For Europe Day, the climate bank of the European Union, the European Investment Bank, is launching a 360-degree video experience that invites European citizens to visit virtually some of these climate projects for themselves. The episode from Spain enables viewers to experience how Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionising safety in remote areas in Catalonia in the context of climate change.

In the episode “Sensors for Safety” the European Investment Bank’s 360° video crew takes viewers on a journey into the rugged Pyrenees mountains of Spain, to learn about a remote sensing system that is bringing a new degree of safety and resilience to an isolated stretch of track where a rockslide derailed a train earlier this year. Recognising the potential of this new technology, the EIB is supporting research and development by the Barcelona based company Worldsensing in the hope of extending the lifespan of infrastructure and adapting to the weather extremes of climate change.

The catalog, published by the Government of Catalonia and Catalonia Trade & Invest, explores circular economy use cases in water, waste, energy and new materials, split by sectors such as education, packaging, built environment, design industries and sustainable mobility.
All use cases were selected according to criteria around replicability, business model, degree of circularity, amount of impact and coverage, and level of use of technology and innovation. In addition, the companies and projects were chosen for meeting the three key circular economy values of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use and regenerating natural systems.
Catalonia’s circular economy ecosystem encompassed more than 390 companies and 70,400 employees in 2014 and generated €4 billion in revenue in 2015, Catalan government figures show. Companies featured in the catalog alongside Worldsensing include water administrator Aigües de Barcelona, filter maker Tapp Water, wine giant Torres, steelmaker Celsa Group, secondhand retailer Humana, ecological greengrocer Veritas, waste processor Suez and carmaker Seat.
Worldsensing’s support for the mining industry includes the provision of monitoring systems and services that can play a critical role in controlling the stability of tailings dams. These are large reservoirs containing the byproducts of mining, frequently in the form of toxic water or sludge. The figures from Worldsensing’s annual satisfaction survey show overwhelming support for the brand, with 79% of respondents rating Worldsensing above competing solution vendors for IoT remote monitoring.
With the technology being used in over 70 countries, more than half of the participants from across the globe said they have been using Worldsensing products and solutions for more than two years.
While more than 91% of respondents agreed that the Worldsensing portfolio matched their needs, customers are especially satisfied with the team’s knowledge and responsiveness. On a scale of zero to 10, the satisfaction rate with the team amounts to 8.9 overall.
Key reasons for choosing the Worldsensing monitoring solution include its long-range, low-power LoRa radio communications and the option to use the technology for up to 10 years based on the battery-powered, wireless data loggers. Having an end-to-end solution, from node configuration to data access, is considered another bonus.
Managing their deployments, devices and data through the cloud is an important feature for 83% of respondents, with 65% already using cloud-based software and 18% expecting to do so within the next 12 months.
“We are naturally delighted by this massive vote of confidence, but we won’t be resting on our laurels,” said Worldsensing’s Chief Product and Marketing Officer Andrew Frost. “We are continuing to improve our portfolio in line with what we hear from our customers.”
Worldsensing’s satisfaction survey is issued every year and goes to customers and partners that have bought Worldsensing products and services within the previous 12 months. The latest survey was carried out between October and December 2021.
The survey results are collected and processed by an independent market research firm. The poll went out to Worldsensing customers mostly in construction, rail, mining and infrastructure monitoring.
94% of respondents praised the team’s excellent and fast service. “Our annual insights survey is a key part of our efforts to lead the industry in terms of service excellence,” said Frost.
“At the same time, though, we are keen to get feedback at any point in time. We want our customers and partners to know they can come to us anytime with questions, suggestions and concerns.”
Worldsensing today named Andrea Bartoli as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with a remit to guide technology strategy as the business seeks to scale up globally.
Bartoli, whose academic credentials include a telecommunications engineering degree from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and a doctorate from the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya, Spain, was promoted from within after seven years with Worldsensing.
His previous roles included Head of Innovation and, most recently, Director of Business Development. As CTO, he will work directly with Worldsensing Chief Executive Ignasi Vilajosana on turning the company’s Internet of Things-based monitoring vision into reality.
Bartoli’s appointment marks a change in how the CTO is positioned within the Worldsensing organization. Bartoli’s predecessor, Albert Zaragoza, was both CTO and Head of Engineering until September 2021.
“As our business increases its focus on extending our leadership within the geotechnical monitoring space and beyond, it has become clear we need someone who can focus 100% on delivering our technology vision,” said Vilajosana.

Working alongside Chief Product and Marketing Officer Andrew Frost, Bartoli is expected to address three areas of technology development within the Worldsensing technology portfolio.
The first is to continue to expand Worldsensing’s industry-leading integration capabilities, allowing Worldsensing technologies to work seamlessly with the widest possible range of third-party instrumentation and monitoring equipment and analysis and visualization software.
The second is to bring new components to the company’s monitoring and connectivity portfolio so customers and partners can enjoy ever-greater levels of efficiency and cost-effectiveness when using Worldsensing technologies.

Worldsensing today confirmed mounting interest in its technology for rail infrastructure monitoring, with major European network operators currently evaluating and deploying the technology.
SNCF’s rail network management arm SNCF Réseau this month confirmed it had obtained positive assessment results for Worldsensing’s tiltmeter device range, Tilt90, and the company’s on-premise connectivity management software, CMT Edge, paving the way for the technology to be used in track condition monitoring in France.
“The tests went well, and the results are more than convincing,” said Théotime Fragnol, SNCF Réseau Survey Engineer, after the Worldsensing equipment achieved a 99% usable data transmission rate under test conditions.
“Sensors can be installed on the track quickly and easily, so we don’t have to spend much time on site. The same goes for the communication gateway, which takes up little space and is easy to install,” Fragnol added.
The results should allow Worldsensing technology to be used across the whole of France’s state-owned railway system.
SNCF Réseau is one of several European rail infrastructure operators evaluating Worldsensing products and systems for track monitoring, following extensive deployment of the technology in specific projects across Europe.
Some examples include the Hieflauer Tunnel in Austria, HS1 and Crossrail in the UK, the U5 Metro Line in Germany, Roslagsbanan Railway in Sweden, Grand Paris Metro in France, Fornebu Metro in Norway and the Eppenburg Tunnel in Switzerland, among others.
In addition to SNCF, in Spain the railway infrastructure operators Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (Adif), Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) and Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) are validating and adopting Worldsensing devices and networks to monitor rail track conditions as well as geotechnical influencers on track stability such as slopes or retaining walls along the tracks.
Adif is evaluating the value of Worldsensing devices with CMT Cloud, the cloud-based software to manage the connectivity of the monitoring networks. “COMSA, Adif’s maintenance operator, uses Worldsensing equipment to monitor potential failures of the railway related to possible defects in the general track such as loss of cant in curves and turnouts like structural integrity and warps, stability of sleepers and ballast,” says Toni Galindo, COMSA Rail Project Manager.
FGC, meanwhile, is looking into the use of CMT Cloud with crack meters and environmental sensors for rock fall detection, subsoil monitoring and measuring track parameters such as cant, twist and height variation. “The equipment provided by Worldsensing allows an improvement in predictive maintenance systems, taking advantage of the benefits of digital transformation. It also helps to digitize FGC’s internal processes to improve the service and management of the railway infrastructure,” said Josep Carles Terés, Head of Innovation at FGC.
Finally, TMB is investigating whether Worldsensing devices and CMT Edge could help make sure the reverberations caused by trains on nearby buildings are within regulated limits.

Worldsensing has pre-launched an Event Detection Solution at GeoBusiness 2021 in London based on the recently launched Tilt90 wireless tiltmeter range. The tiltmeters are designed to take periodic readings which increase automatically when a threshold is reached, which then also triggers a notification message.
This new solution is an enhancement in the monitoring of the integrity of tailings dams, slopes, embankments and other landslide-prone areas. It can also be used in any motion monitoring application.
It allows engineers to set a critical threshold beyond which readings will be taken more frequently, allowing asset owners to monitor movements more closely and, if necessary, take remedial action before a failure occurs.
Previously, monitoring experts and engineers would have to adjust sampling rates manually once a threshold had been reached. This could involve delays and possible risks if personnel in the field were exposed to a rapidly evolving failure.
Now, a change in inclination beyond a particular threshold will result in a notification from the system and an automatic increase in sampling rates, allowing engineers to assess the situation remotely and make decisions based on near real-time data.
The monitoring data from Worldsensing’s Tilt90-XE and Tilt90-IE wireless tiltmeters is sent to the Worldsensing Connectivity Management Tool (CMT), hosted in the cloud or installed on customer premises.
From there, the data can be easily integrated into third-party early warning systems using MQTT, Message Queuing Telemetry Transport protocol. The event detection solution only starts collecting more frequent readings beyond a given threshold. Once tilt measurements return to normal, the sampling rate also reverts to normal.

The company recruited Matt Azzopardi in April, to manage product sales for Europe. And in March Worldsensing augmented its North American commercial team with the addition of seasoned geoscience engineer Tamara Maxwell.
Worldsensing is continuing to expand its global workforce after being awarded €10 million (USD$12 million) in European Investment Bank growth finance in December 2020.
Worldsensing today announced moves to further improve the sustainability of its supply chain through a partnership with Naeko Logistics.
The move will see Worldsensing, the IoT pioneer and a global leader in providing remote monitoring solutions, shipping its technology to more than 270 engineering companies and partners in over 60 countries via a provider that shares the company’s strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) credentials.
Naeko is one of Spain’s foremost logistics providers in terms of ESG performance and is currently seeking B Corporation certification, the highest level of institutional recognition in this field. Naeko’s ESG commitments include investments in renewable energy generation and 100% recyclable packaging.
The logistics firm, based in Sant Boi de Llobregat near Barcelona in Spain, is an ideal partner for Worldsensing. The company’s monitoring technology addresses four of the United Nation’s sustainable development goals, including improvements in affordable and clean energy and building resilient infrastructure.

Recent ESG initiatives at Naeko have helped save 250 tons of CO2 since 2019 and include a 100-kilowatt solar array for renewable energy at the company’s head office, low-power LED lighting in the company’s Sant Boi warehouse and the replacement of plastic and non-biodegradable packaging with 100% recycled or recyclable materials.

Worldsensing has been involved in projects to build and advance sustainable solutions funded by the European Union for over a decade. Among them is the Greenedge project, which seeks to promote, design and implement more energy-efficient edge computing systems. Within the Harvestore initiative, Worldsensing is contributing to developing green solutions for energy harvesting and storing. The company is also a member of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology EIT RawMaterials group.
