Worldsensing participates in SMESEC, a project aiming to protect small and medium-sized enterprises against cyber threats.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are an important driver for innovation and economic growth in the EU. SMEs are also believed to gain the most benefits from innovative technologies that promise convenient deployment and economical operation of Information Communication Technology (ICT).
When developing new products, it is not easy for SMEs to estimate all risks and business consequences involved with regards to cyber security. SMESEC project is run by an international group of 12 cyber security experts from 7 countries who are aware of the fact that SMEs have limited knowledge on cyber security and restricted budgets in order to protect their businesses against cybercrime. The aim of the consortium is to develop a cyber security framework for SMEs in 36 months.
SMESEC project was launched by the 12 participating partners on 8 June 2017 during a kickoff meeting in Barcelona, Spain, where participants defined the project organization, the tool suite, and use cases which will be used to validate and demonstrate the project’s approach.
SMESEC consortium proposes to develop a cost-effective framework composed of a specific cyber security tool-kit to support SMEs in managing network information security risks and threats. It will also help SMEs to identify opportunities for implementing secure innovative technology in the digital market. The aim of the project is to educate SMEs on how they can learn to guard their businesses against costly cybercrime attacks.
As one of the cyper security experts involved in SMESEC, Worldsensing will address security challenges Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platforms face based on their architecture and the specific nature of IIoT systems.
The security challenges Worldsensing will be working on are:
- The complexity of security assessments.
- Security/Code vulnerability.
- Endpoint protection and
- Human behavior.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 740787 (SMESEC). This work is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education‚ Research and Innovation (SERI) under contract number 17.00067.
About SMESEC
SMESEC is a project lead by an international group of 12 cyper security experts from 7 countries as a response to the cyber security challenges SMEs face who have limited knowledge on cyber security protection and restricted budgets. The SMESEC experts are aiming to developed a cyber security framework for SMEs within 36 months. The consortium is led by ATOS, with has many years of experience in project management and cyber security, and involves large companies, SMEs, research centers, and universities. While supported by research centers and universities, SMESEC is an industry-oriented project, in which private companies will cover more than 73% of the total project costs.
